"Scarcely have we awoken to a new year before we must adjust to a strange trend in living. People are buying king-size beds. The wider models are outselling standard double beds. Apparently, they have become a "social space". Perhaps this comes of the tendency to slop about all day in pyjama-like clothing. Rather than holding a daily levee, like the kings of France, the new ideal seems to be never to get up. Duvet days are expanding into mattress months.

Confirming this trend is the emergence of the "TV bed", with a screen built into the foot. TV beds are advertised (on television) by models curled up with boxes of chocolates but looking suspiciously slim on such a relaxed regime. Long ago, the television replaced the hearth as the focus of family life, such as it remains. Where the telly is, there our heart must be."
